What happens when you take complicated cardiac survivors, who have faced death head on, and put them at the starting line of the worlds toughest endurance race? They know rock bottom. They’ve been beaten down, chewed up and spit out. Their bodies have ached from doctors ripping open their chest. Their scars are a constant reminder that they were once weak and frail. These individuals have something to prove not only to their family, but also to their community, their doctors, and most importantly to themselves.
Director David Watkins brings together individuals that clearly break the mold in what defines athletes. HEART: Flatline to Finish Line will examine a year of training and preparing to meet pain and suffering like never before. Coming from all corners of the country, these athletes will meet together at the starting line to the rest of their lives. Eight athletes, one goal. Making it to the finish line of Ironman, a 140.6 mile endurance race that will test their minds, bodies and most importantly, their hearts.
Watkins knows all too well the struggles these athletes have faced. In 2005, he underwent open-heart surgery to replace his aortic valve. A month following his recovery from surgery, he faced another setback, a stroke which left him temporarily without vision in his left eye. After nearly losing his life, Watkins did the unthinkable; he decided to run in a half marathon. Seven months after running in his first half marathon, he decided to step it up a notch and found himself at the starting line of Ironman Coeur d’Alene. Regardless if he was the last one to finish that day, Watkins wanted to teach his children a valuable lesson, that no matter the circumstances, regardless of what others may say, believe in yourself, work hard and stay focusedanything is possible.
Taking his personal struggles and accomplishments to the masses, he founded the Ironheart Racing Team http://www.ironheartracing.com. In 2012, Watkins reached out to seven cardiac survivors from across the world who are training for their own personal goals. The documentary features their stories, their cardiac struggles and how they use sport and athleticism as a way to stay healthy and inspire others. Many have simply joined to help spread awareness of heart disease and healthy heart living through exercise and competition.
We cant finish this documentary without the support of our community, said David Watkins. Filming has begun but we need to continue to raise funds to ensure this inspiring story is told from the survivors turned athletes themselves.
Heart: Flatline to Finish Line, captures the stories of survivors that have flat lined on the operating table, how they took their first steps following surgery and tells of their triumphant return to the rest of their lives when they embark on their first day of training. This documentary will prove that, with a strong mind, and a healthy amount of determination, anyone can accomplish the impossible. For Watkins, its his final Ironman race. This time the message is simple, Do what you love and do it with heart. Learn what it means to have heart an Ironheart.
