Reducing Air Pollution and Increasing Greenery in Kabul City

In Kabul, air pollution has been dramatically increased due to a rise in the number of cars, low-fuel quality, deforestation and replacement of greenery to buildings. All of these things have directly affected the health of people. In terms of pollution, we are facing a crisis. If such pollution existed anywhere else in the world, there would be no schools open, no shops open, and government agencies would not be able to function properly.

The air pollution (which is worsening in Kabul) is threatening the health and well-being of its four million residents. Over 70 per cent of diseases in Kabul are linked to air pollution; severe air pollution causes respiratory disorders, eye and nasal problems, and is one of the major causes of lung cancer. Kabul has also lost over 70 per cent of its greenery over the past two decades, which is directly contributed by the expansion of air pollution. Vehicle emissions are considered a major donor to air pollution; every month over 8,000 new vehicles registered with the Kabul traffic department. There is evidence that suggests air pollution may have grown worse, given that there are more vehicles on the roads, land and air transport has increased and the population has increased, because of the return of refugees.

  • 1st Point – Improve education in Kabul regarding the risks of pollution through training workshops, and distributing brochures.
  • 2nd Point – Increase trees and greenery on the road sides and hills surrounding Kabul city by planting new saplings and protecting the existing trees.
  • 3rd Point – Aim to encourage people to use carpools through organizing awareness campaigns, and distributing brochures which explains how carpools can reduce vehicle emissions.

People should also be careful not to throw away their trash on the streets, highways, or on pavements. They should feel  responsible for things such as keeping the area around their houses, shops, and streets clean. If people leave everything for the government and feel careless, we will be facing troubles and difficulties regarding pollutions and greeneries. Consequently, it is both the government and the people’s responsibility to cooperate with each other so that we can a bright future. Therefore, we will not face a crisis and we will have a good clean air and an abundaance of greenery in Kabul city.

unfortunately, i disagree with all of you except one person.

  7. nahid says:

Society today is all about blaming others and not taking personal responsibility. We as a nation are lazy, we are ignorant, and we do not care about anything but ourselves.
Its time people made a stand to protect something that is vital for all of our well-being: the environment.
I’m really annoyed by people these days. They think the government should be responsible for everything that goes wrong, when in actuality, it is our fault. If everyone just cleans up the area in front of their homes or plants a few trees, Afghanistan would be such a pretty place.

  11. Hi Mr. Wahid I really appreciate your article about the ongoing worse air pollution in Kabul.

I totally agree with the points that you have mentioned about the main causes and effects of air pollution in Kabul. I think that, worse air pollution is the root of all dangerous diseases and it causes diverse types of incurable diseases and threatens the normal life of human beings. So I believe that, every one of us is fully responsible of cleaning the environment around us. Thus, there is no need to blame the government of Afghanistan for its negligence in this critical issue. Instead, at first People should also be careful not to throw away their trash on the houses, streets, highways, and towns by this way we could be able to clean up the environment around us and people will less suffer from the bad consequences of air pollution.

Thank you Waheed for your thoughts! You are right; abating pollution is a significantly vital concern in the country because of its hazardous effects on people’s health and environment. Taking care of the environment is taking care of ourselves. The sooner it is dealt with, the better it will be for the society.
